In the late 1970s Wheeling, WV began a two decade slide that paralleled the declining American steel industry. In the mid 1990s a unique partnership, the Wheeling National Heritage Area, emerged to bring together partners throughout the region for the mission of conserving, interpreting, and enhancing Wheeling’s unique heritage. Through this partnership, the Wheeling National Heritage Area has helped the city recapture its historic waterfront for entertainment and recreation, embrace an historic preservation-based approach to economic development, and reinvigorate downtown’s iconic Capitol Theatre.

Artists (and people who appreciate the arts) have been moving to Mineral Point for decades. What has attracted them to this small Wisconsin town? How has the presence of working artists changed the community? How has the art community evolved over time? Joy will share stories of some of the people who have landed in Mineral Point over the years and talk about the texture they have added to the community. She will describe some of the artist incubators that were in place during the past and an arts education center that brings workshops in a variety of visual, literary, and performance arts to Shake Rag Alley, the historic heart of Mineral Point.

She will focus specifically on arts programs utilized by Halifax Regional Health System, and their partnership with community resources
