| Jet engines might take the massive, metal bird airborne,
but it would probably take just that.
Scattered across the rambling field at the corner of Cage Trail
and Shanti, perhaps 30 original sculptures constantly capture the
attention and imagination of fascinated passersby.
Artist R.F. Cage's idyllic hideaway - turned sculpture garden -
is turning heads as local residents and tourists cruise by, sometimes
bumper-to-bumper, marveling at the metal giants
Robert F. Cage, born October 7, 1923, began his life of creativity
during the depression by making his own toys. The interest in making
things continued and while living in Washington, D.C., Cage studied
painting with Ralph DeBourges a noted artist and teacher. It was
then that one of his works was selected to a juried exhibition
at the Smithsonian, which “ignited a lifelong passion in
him for the arts.” Cage’s education and training in
the arts continued at the Salisbury School of Art in Zimbabwe,
where he received a degree in fine arts. Later, he studied at the
American Students and Artists League in Paris. He has exhibited
in numerous museums and galleries throughout the southeast; most
recently, he exhibited at The Prizery in South Boston, Virginia.

The
Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, Halifax Educational
Foundation,
and Town
of South Boston are excited to be the recipients
of a $700,000 Community Development Block Grant. The grant application
was a true collaborative effort between the three entities, and the
funds will be used to purchase Advanced Manufacturing Technology
Equipment to outfit the Innovation Center, currently under renovation
at the
former American Tobacco Warehouse. The equipment will be used to
establish a “smart factory” that will be the centerpiece for the
SVHEC R&D Center for Manufacturing Innovation and a key component
in Danville Community College’s new Product Design & Development
program, which will be offered at the SVHEC beginning this fall.
The Product Design & Development program focuses on advanced manufacturing
and engineering in the study and development (from conceptualization
to manufacturing) of products, with an initial emphasis on the wood
products industry. Having this program in Halifax County is another
step towards regional economic and workforce development as the program
benefits all levels of workers. From high school students entering
the workforce to existing and dislocated workers who need to improve
their skills, this program will be a rich asset to the local community
and region. Studies estimate that within three years, the program will
graduate 60 Associate’s and Certificate level graduates. Associate’s
and Certificate level courses will begin this Fall in a smaller space
at the SVHEC, and will relocate to the ATW facility once it is complete.

Bruce Art Association Gallery

The PARSONS-BRUCE GALLERY
217-A Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592
Since 1974, the steadfast mission of the Parsons-Bruce Art Association
has been the encouragement and support of the lively and creative
arts
of the Southern Virginia region, and the enrichment of the economic
and cultural profile of our community.
The Parsons-Bruce Gallery represents more than 50 artists who
create
fine art and exquisite crafts. Close to 20 artists are from Halifax
County, and the others are from Virginia and North Carolina, with
several from other states and countries. The Gallery is a multimedia
aesthetic experience that showcases paintings in every mode and
material, wood and stone sculpture, photography, decorative and
functional pottery and art glass, stained glass, jewelry,
and a great variety of collectible, wearable, and affordable art.
This year, to set the stage for revitalization of the community
through the arts and engage the people in the joys of art and culture,
the Gallery initiated a Summer series of three "Third Thursday"
events, bringing downtown merchants, and Destination Downtown South
Boston together to create "artful" evenings with special
exhibitions,
guest artists as speakers, local talent entertainment, community
paintings, and special offerings from the merchants

| The Convergence
Art Guild is an organization "of artists for
artists", according to its unofficial motto. Founded in 2008,
it's goal is to provide working space for artists and craftspeople,
galleries and classrooms. Its new building will contain all of these
things as well as a public lounge area where people can gather, enjoy
coffee, tea and pastries and read, converse or just meditate in an
atmosphere surrounded by art. Public functions beginning within a month
will include exhibitions, readings, performances, classes and a weekly
film program. Among the classes that will be offered will be a progressive
series of drawing and painting classes for college students and adults
and art classes for home-schooled students. |
